Prairie Village was a planned community, the brainchild of Johnson County native, J.C. Nichols, who had designed the Country Club Plaza area in Kansas City. Construction began on the future site of Prairie Village in 1941 and by 1949 the village was a reality; a reality named “best planned community in America” by the National Association of Homebuilders soon after its completion.

Among other accolades, Prairie Village was named by the Kansas City Star as one of the five best suburban cities in the region.
