Olathe is one of the oldest communities in Johnson County., It was founded in 1857 before the state of Kansas in 1858. Olathe sits on the heart of Johnson County but also became one of the major stops on the Santa Fe Trail & Oregon California Trail. There was as many as 600 wagons that stopped in a week that were traveling west to the gold mines & farming settlements.
The Mahaffie family had contracted that the stagecoachs could stop on their 570 acre farm. But that had come to an abrupt stop when the railroad arrive in the early 1870's. The Santa Fe Depot was built in the early 1881's and three railroads had come thru the city with a population of over 3000.
in 1907 the Strang Trolly had been opened and connected Olathe to city of Kansas City! This was one of the first gas/electric trolley and one of he most profitable in the country! As the explosion of the automobile age things changed!
Olathe is unique blend of smaller, older community with rich in history to an area of newer suburban feel of today. Olathe is about 20 minutes from downtown Kansas City. Olathe has an abundance of shopping & dining within the city limits. the 119 Street cooridor is fill with plenty of places to visit! You'll find everything from Target, to Border Books, to Michael's to Home Depot & Best Buy! So a little bit of everything there! Plus at the other end of Olathe - you'll find the Great Plain mall that is basically a discount mall.
