Lenexa, Kansas, a suburb of Kansas City, Missouri, is located just east of Overland Park, Kansas. The city of around 48,000 residents was once known as the "Spinach Capital of the World" and honors that tradition by hosting a Spinach Festival each September. Lenexa is also home to the Kansas Barbecue Cookoff, the former home of "Wild Bill" Hickok and a host of challenging and diverse golf courses.

Eastern Kansas is a great place for golf courses. The playing season spans from mid-April through October (sometimes longer if the late fall weather is mild.) The area also boasts rolling terrain, dramatic stands of trees, rock quarries and a number of natural water features. The best area golf courses make good use of these elements. A few of these premier Lenexa golf courses are outlined below:

This Lenexa golf course was rated one of the best new courses in 2009 by Golfweek magazine. Opened in 2007, this private course is located on the site of a former limestone quarry and the course takes full advantage with sheer cliffs, dramatic rises and an elevation change of 140 feet throughout the course. This 18-hole, 7,004, par 71 course was designed by golf architect Tom Jackson along with PGA professional, Tom Kelly. The Golf Club of Kansas is a part of the Kansas Sports Center, a 32-acre complex that also includes a discount golf pro shop, state-of-the-art baseball batting cages and an 18-hole miniature golf course.

One of the most attractive golf courses, the 18-hole championship course at Lake Quivira Country Club snakes around the 200-acre lake at the center of this gated community. Unlike many similar residential golf communities, the course at Lake Quivira is lined with trees, not homes, and features narrow, challenging fairways. Facilities at this private club include an elegant clubhouse, multiple restaurants and fishing, boating and swimming opportunities on Lake Quivira. Membership is not limited to residents.

Another of the top Shawnee KS golf courses is the Tomahawk Hills golf course. This public course, built in 1910, is one of the oldest golf courses in the Kansas City metropolitan area. It's also one of greater Kansas City's most challenging public courses. Located adjacent to Shawnee Mission Park, Tomahawk Hills' 6,000-yard, par 70 course offers rolling fairways and cliff views from the 9th and 18th tees. The course is open daily during the season and offers an array of discounts, including senior, junior and early morning discounts. Facilities at Tomahawk Hills include a practice area and a clubhouse.
