Over the last week I have received so many calls from many of my clients who have homes in the Overland Park and Olathe area. They had called asking what do we do after a hail storm?  Do we automatically hire a roofer, etc?

Our area had just gone through a hail storm on the weekend of April 2, 2011. We had seen hail as large as golf balls in a few areas of town. One of the things you shouldn't do is just hire the contractors that just show up your door and ask you to sign a waiver to work with your insurance company direct. As a home owner I would make sure the property is secure and then call the insurance company. Let them get an insurance adjustor out to the property and review the damages. Then begin the hunt for a reputable company to do the repairs.  Ask for referrals from the insurance company and anyone who has had the opportunity to hire a contractor to do that type of work.

Make sure you know your insurance policy and what to expect as to the deductibles and what is typically covered. Ask your insurance ask to review the process with you, what expenses you can anticipate along with time frame for getting the approval for work. We have a video interviewing James Varhall of Blue Valley Insurance about understanding your homeowners policy and knowing your coverage.
